shared decision making: during labor & delivery
Labor Stage 2: Delivering the baby
The delivery of your baby is usually called the second stage of labor. The second stage of labor starts when your cervix is completely dilated and ends when your baby is delivered.
Contractions
During the second stage of labor, contractions usually last around 45-90 seconds and are spaced further apart. You can use the time in between contractions to rest.
Pushing
Once your cervix is fully dilated at 10cm, your care team will let you know that you can start pushing. Once you are ready to start pushing, your care team will guide you on when to push. Some women may feel a natural urge to push down with their contractions. Your care team and support person will be there to help coach and encourage you throughout the entire delivery.
Body positions
Delivering the baby can be an exhausting process, and there are several different positions you might try, such as squatting, sitting, or lying on your side. Each position has its own benefits, and your care team can help you find the position that is best for you.
Breathing techniques
You can use different breathing techniques to help you relax or bear down with your contractions. Some moms-to-be will naturally fall into a breathing pattern, and it’s important to do what feels right to you.
Crowning
When your baby’s head crowns, or starts to come out of the vagina, you may have a burning feeling. You will continue pushing with your contractions until the baby is delivered.
