How labor progresses
Overview: Signs of Labor
Every delivery is a little different but they all follow the same general pattern. Below, you will find an overview of some things that you will want to be thinking about before you go into labor.
How will the first stage of labor progress?
The first stage of labor has three phases: early labor, active labor and transition.
In early labor, you will begin to have contractions. At first, they may be mild and infrequent. They might feel like a back ache, menstrual cramps or tightening in the pelvic area. During early labor, it is important to try to get some rest and relax at home. As you move into active labor, contractions will become more intense and more frequent. If you have contractions and are not sure if they are real or Braxton Hicks contractions, make sure to call your care team to check. Labor progresses until your cervix is fully dilated and you are ready to push.
When should I go to the hospital?
Call your care team if you are in labor but are not sure when you should go to the hospital. Once your contractions have become stronger, longer, and are coming regularly, you should go to the hospital.
What’s normal in the first stage of labor?
It is normal for your contractions to become more intense and more frequent. It is also normal to have a pinkish or blood-tinged discharge, or for your water to break.
When should I call 911?
It is important to call 911 if you have severe pain in your belly or a lot of vaginal bleeding. If you have questions but it is not an emergency, call you care team.
